The NFPA defines three levels of chimney inspection, each designed for specific situations. Understanding these levels helps you know what you're getting and ensures you request the right inspection for your needs.
Level 1 Inspection
**When it's needed**: Annual maintenance inspections when no changes have been made to your system.
**What it includes**: The technician examines readily accessible portions of the chimney exterior and interior, plus accessible portions of the appliance and chimney connection. They verify the chimney is structurally sound, free of obstructions, and properly sized for connected appliances.
**What it doesn't include**: The inspector won't access areas requiring special tools or remove any components. They won't go on your roof unless it's safely accessible.
**Cost**: Level 1 is typically included with a standard chimney cleaning or available as a standalone service.
Level 2 Inspection
**When it's needed**: - When buying or selling a home - After any change to the system (new insert, relining, fuel type change) - After a chimney fire or other incident - When problems are suspected
**What it includes**: Everything in Level 1, plus examination of accessible areas in attics, crawl spaces, and basements. The inspector will use video scanning equipment to examine the flue interior. They'll verify proper clearances from combustibles.
**What it doesn't include**: Level 2 still doesn't involve removing or destroying any part of the chimney or building.
**Cost**: Level 2 inspections cost more due to additional time and equipment (video camera inspection).
Level 3 Inspection
**When it's needed**: When a Level 1 or 2 inspection reveals hidden hazards that can't be assessed without access to concealed areas.
**What it includes**: Everything in Levels 1 and 2, plus removal of certain components (chimney cap, appliance, interior chimney wall) as needed to investigate specific concerns.
**What it doesn't include**: Level 3 is limited to the removal necessary to investigate the specific concern—it's not a blanket authorization to dismantle your chimney.
**Cost**: Level 3 is the most expensive because it may involve demolition and reconstruction.
Which Level Do You Need?
For routine annual maintenance, Level 1 is appropriate. If you're buying a home or have experienced any changes or incidents, request Level 2. Your inspector will recommend Level 3 only if serious concealed damage is suspected.
